I just did a transfer of 8mm for a client...and I did it the 'ol cheap way by playing the film on the best projector I could find on a piece of white tag board. I made the projected image as small as possible while staying in focus to make the sharpest image I could. Then I shot it with my XL1 at the slowest shutter speed I could get...1/60. The result was a surprisingly good image with just a little flicker. If you have a cam with even slower shutter speeds you could elimenate the flicker all together. I found that the image I got with my XL1 in this fashion was as good and at times better that the original because, let's face it, old 8MM film looks like crap most of the time anyway.
